Are our Vacation Club Memberships Really Worth It?

While a Vacation Club may seem like the most convenient option to enjoy your vacations, the price tag can be prohibitive. Even the cheapest membership options can cost several thousand dollars. Membership fees can quickly add up to several thousand dollars, and some clubs have limitations on how many family members can be included. Some of these limitations can add emotional and financial costs to your vacation. It’s important to know exactly what you’re signing up for and how much it will cost before you join.

Some Vacation Clubs charge yearly dues in exchange for points that you can redeem at a later date. While this might seem like a small amount, you should consider that you’ve already paid for the points. So why should you have to pay another bill for them? It’s very common for people to fall for this scheme, and the result can be more than a thousand dollars in added expense per year.

Disney’s Vacation Club is another example. Members pay annual dues, which cover the costs of operating the resort and paying real estate taxes on your investment. The annual fee for a Disney Vacation Club membership is about three hundred dollars and can increase by $100 each year. Members can borrow unused points from one year to another. This allows them to squeak in extra trips this year. And because unused points can be transferred to another family, it’s possible to borrow points if needed.
